Yes, we are all alive and kicking in Baku. I am sorry to have been so long in updating this website. I couldn’t believe my last entry was in July.
Let me try to give you a quick summary of that last couple months. We went camping in the middle of August to a place called “Cloud Catcher Canyon.” It’s an amazing area in the mountains, there are lots of great hiking areas. At night the stars were unbelievable, millions of them.
The kids started school on August 20th. They are attending the International School of Azerbaijan (TISA) and so far its going very well. There are about 500 students at the school from kindergarten to Grade 12. It is a very international place with staff and students from around the world. The kids have been getting back into routine and dealing with a fair bit of homework. We feel really blessed that the children are able to attend this school and we know it will be a good experience for them.
At church I started a preaching series entitled “Successful Expat Living.” Using the ‘exile’ period from the Old Testament we are talking about living “in the world but not of it.” Hopefully it is helpful to people who are living in a new culture far from home. I talked about some of the stages in culture shock and how this is a perfect time to let God work in your life. I have two convictions about people living in Baku: 1) I don’t believe we are here by accident by it is part of God’s plan for our lives, and 2) God’s plan is that He wants to transform us and get closer to us.
Our small groups have also launched for the fall season and its exciting to see people connecting in this way. This Friday morning we are starting a new Men’s Breakfast at a restaurant in the city center. We’ll meet from 7-8 am and have a short devotional time.
We have really been enjoying family life this past week because Grandma and Grandpa Fortune have come for a visit. Their trip here was delayed by problems in Ottawa and Toronto by Air Canada. They missed their connecting flight in Germany but came a few hours later on a flight from Vienna. It’s been great having them here. I am sure they are on overload with all the new sites and sounds but they are holding up well. They also brought lots of treats from home so we have been well cared for.
Well that’s a quick overview and I will do better keeping this updated. Thanks to our regular readers for hanging in there.
